What is the VW Turtle Race

The VW Turtle Race is an annual fundraising event hosted by Volkswagen Kamloops. This will the 18th year that the race has been run and will be held on Saturday Saturday September 14, 2019. The proceeds from the ticket sales go to support local youth theatre programs through WCT.

The race uses turtles have been created from environmentally safe plastics and are not in any way damaging to the environment. All of the turtles used in the VW Turtle Race are recovered at the end of each race.

As well as being a fun day at the park, once again we’re sharing Riverside Park with Kamloops Art Council’s, Children’s Art Festival, so in addition to fun and games on the beach, you can check out the activity booths and entertainment provided at The Children’s Art Festival.

How Does the VW Turtle Race Work?
Each ticket sold corresponds to a specific turtle that will be part of the race. At the start of the race, all of the turtles are dumped into the South Thompson River. The race runs from one end of the Riverside Park beach area to the other. The race starts near the historical flood markers and ends at the pier. All turtle wrangling is done by volunteers in kayaks.
The owners of the first 3 turtles to cross the finish line win great prizes!
Where Does the Money Go?
Once again the proceeds go to support Western Canada Theatre’s youth programming, including Stage One production classes, outreach to students and highly subsidized tickets for family-friendly programming.
