CoActive Developments Worker Co-op (CoActive) – A new way to plan the succession of your business

January 17, 2023 at 1:27 pm  News

Recognizing the unceded traditional territories of the Secwépemc, the Coast Salish People: xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ / sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) nations whose lands provide us with nourishment, livelihood and recreation, Marty Frost, Chris Galloway and Daphane Nelson are today making an announcement relating to the launch of a new business CoActive Developments Worker Co-op (CoActive).

“The Silver Tsunami of business owner retirements is upon us, and with as few as 10% with a business succession plan in place; employees, customers, and the businesses themselves are being left in a precarious state. Exploring succession planning through Employee-Owned Businesses is a viable and exciting opportunity and we are delighted to offer this option to business owners in BC,” says Daphane Nelson, founding director of CoActive.

Each transition is unique, meaning that no two businesses will begin and end their development the same way. To broaden knowledge about cooperatives and to support accessibility to business owners and their employees, CoActive also reveals the commencement of a Feasibility Pilot Project. Ten businesses will be selected to undergo their individualized feasibility analysis at reduced cost to the owner and employee group.

Employee-Owned Businesses preserve jobs in small communities, are less likely to default on their debt and, and are more resilient in economic downturns.

Marty Frost, Daphane Nelson and Chris Galloway are the founding directors of CoActive Developments Worker Co-op which was incorporated in September 2022 after months of conversation and research around bridging gaps between the cooperative model and the business development sector.
