NDP MLA Melanie Mark says new infrastructure funding a boost for community services

NDP MLAs Lore and Fleming say funding will help local governments to deliver housing faster in Victoria

VICTORIA – New Democrat MLAs Grace Lore and Rob Fleming say local governments are receiving funding that will help them implement new provincial legislation to build more homes for people faster.

“We know that housing in our province hasn’t kept up with the needs of the community,” said Grace Lore, MLA for Victoria-Beacon Hill. “While we are taking action at a provincial level, this funding will support the city and the CRD to get more housing built, faster.”

In Victoria, the following local governments are receiving funding:

  • Victoria, $582,582
  • Capital Regional District, $252,492

“People in Victoria need housing and infrastructure that keeps up with our growth and changing needs,” said Rob Fleming, MLA for Victoria-Swan Lake. “As we continue to invest in these needs at a provincial level, we are also supporting municipal partners so they can adapt to new legislation.”

In response to the new provincial housing legislation passed in 2023, the New Democratic government is providing $51 million to 188 local governments to help them meet the new requirements.

This money will be used to improve planning, development and reporting processes, hire new staff and consultants and help governing bodies become more efficient at approving housing. Smaller communities will especially benefit from this funding as they have fewer resources to make changes.

This funding is part of a historic $19 billion housing investment by the provincial government. Since 2017, more than 77,000 homes have been delivered or are underway across B.C.
