NDP MLA Melanie Mark says new infrastructure funding a boost for community services

NDP MLAs say funding will help local governments to deliver housing faster in Langley

January 17, 2024 at 4:25 pm  Politics, Provincial

LANGLEY- New Democrat MLAs Megan Dykeman and Andrew Mercier say local governments will receive funding that will help them implement new provincial legislation to build more homes for people faster.

“Langley is growing quickly, and our government’s new housing regulations will help accommodate that,” said Megan Dykeman, MLA for Langley-East. “However, we recognize that municipalities will have adjustments to make, so that’s why we’re providing funding to support this transition.”

The City of Langley is receiving $288,390 and the Township is receiving $794,373.

“Our government’s housing plan focuses on higher density building where we will need housing most, like near SkyTrain stations and transit hubs,” said Andrew Mercier, MLA for Langley. “By providing this funding up-front instead of on a yearly basis, we can get started on planning for important transit-oriented development faster.”

In response to the new provincial housing legislation passed in 2023, the New Democratic government is providing $51 million to 188 local governments to help them meet the new requirements.

This money will be utilized by local governments to improve planning, development and reporting processes, hire new staff and consultants and help governing bodies become more efficient at approving housing. Smaller municipalities will especially benefit from this funding as they have fewer resources to make changes.

This funding is part of the historic $19-billion housing investment by the B.C. Government. Since 2017, the province has more than 77,000 homes that have been delivered or are underway across B.C.
