Permanent repairs coming to Highway 17A crossing over Highway 99

January 5, 2024 at 10:04 am  BC, News, Politics, Provincial

Delta residents and drivers in the region are advised that the permanent repairs to the Highway 17A crossing over Highway 99 have been rescheduled to begin on Monday, Jan. 8, 2024.

The Highway 17A crossing over Highway 99 was damaged on July 18, 2023, when struck by an over-height vehicle. The repairs to the crossing will be extensive, involving demolition and girder installation. It is expected that repairs will take until early March to complete, depending on the weather.

There will be full closures of Highway 99 southbound and Highway 17A southbound over three weekends:

Friday, Jan. 12 until Sunday, Jan. 14:

  • Highway 17A southbound closed: Friday from 7 p.m. until Sunday at 5 p.m. (day and night)
  • Highway 99 southbound closed: Friday from 10 p.m. until Sunday at 5 p.m. (day and night)
  • Highway 17A northbound will remain open.

Friday, Jan. 19 until Sunday, Jan. 21:

  • Highway 17A southbound closed: Friday from 7 p.m. until Sunday at 5 p.m. (day and night)
  • Highway 99 southbound closed: Friday 10 p.m. until Sunday at 5 p.m. (day and night)
  • Highway 17A northbound will remain open.

Friday, Jan. 26 until Saturday, Jan. 27:

  • Highway 17A southbound closed: Friday from 7 p.m. until Saturday at 5 p.m. (night and day)
  • Highway 99 will remain open.

During the periods when Highway 99 southbound is closed to accommodate demolition and girder work at the Highway 17A crossing, southbound traffic on Highway 99 must detour via Highway 17A southbound to Ladner Trunk Road and rejoin Highway 99 southbound at the Mathews Interchange.

During the closures of Highway 99 southbound, travellers heading to BC Ferries’ Tsawwassen terminal from Richmond, Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and points beyond are strongly advised to redirect via Highway 91 southbound over the Alex Fraser Bridge to Highway 17 westbound to avoid lengthy delays.

In addition to these weekend closures, Highway 17A will be fully closed southbound every night from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m., beginning Jan. 8. The structure carrying traffic northbound over Highway 99 will remain open. Access to Highway 99 northbound will be maintained via the loop ramp only.

When Highway 17A southbound is closed, drivers who want to cross Highway 99 from the River Road direction must detour north through the George Massey Tunnel to Steveston Interchange, and back southbound on Highway 99 to Highway 17A southbound.

There is also a detour for local traffic via Delta municipal roads, taking Burns Drive to the 72nd Street farm underpass to westbound on Ladner Trunk Road, rejoining Highway 17A.

Drivers are reminded to observe signage, traffic-control personnel and reduced speed limits.
