MAPLE RIDGE – New Democrat MLAs Lisa Beare and Bob D’Eith say that people in Maple Ridge will be safer during extreme temperatures thanks to provincial funding to help local governments and First Nations assess and plan for risks of extreme temperatures that B.C. has been experiencing due to climate change.

“There are people in our communities who are at risk of complications in extreme temperatures, and we’re helping communities make sure that they can take care of those people,” said Lisa Beare, MLA for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows. “With this grant, the City of Maple Ridge will be able to better prepare for a changing climate.”

The City of Maple Ridge is receiving $30,000 in funding for Extreme Temperature Risk Mapping and Assessment.

“Summers have been getting hotter in B.C., and it’s more important than ever that people have ways to stay cool in their community,” said Bob D’Eith, MLA for Maple Ridge-Mission. “This funding will help the City of Maple Ridge plan for extreme temperatures and continue to keep people safe.”

More than $430,000 is being provided through the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF) to communities to improve knowledge of the risks associated with extreme temperatures and how these risks will change over time. The funding may be used to develop effective response plans and strategies to prepare, mitigate, and adapt to those risks.
