EDMONTON – On Tuesday, Canada’s NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh was in Edmonton to talk about the NDP delivering dental care for families and this year’s upcoming expansion of the program.
Singh and the NDP delivered dental care for 10,580 children and their families in Edmonton with a first cheque of $650 to help pay for dental costs. These families will get another $650 cheque by the end of this year, meaning $13 million back in the pockets of Edmonton families. This happened despite Pierre Poilievre using every tool he had to try and stop kids under 12 getting dental care – despite having access to dental care himself paid for by taxpayers for 20 years.
“No one should live in pain or be worried about how they’ll pay for the dental care they need. But for so many Canadians, getting dental care is out of reach from their family budgets. We know it’s getting harder to pay the bills, that’s why we fought to deliver this for people,” said Singh. “Justin Trudeau and the Conservatives teamed up twice to vote against giving Canadians dental care. But we didn’t give up, we kept fighting and now, because of us, many Canadians are getting much-needed relief.”
New Democrats are not done. This interim benefit was just the first step. By the end of the year, children under 18, people living with a disability and seniors that qualify will have access to the permanent program providing free dental care – saving families that qualify at least $1,700. And by the end of this mandate, no one will have to make the difficult choice of not going to the dentist because it’s too expensive.
“People are doing everything right and they feel like they’re falling further and further behind, and Justin Trudeau’s out of touch government is just letting them figure it out on their own,” said Singh. ”The NDP believes you should pay less and get more. Dental care will make life more affordable for families and keep everyone healthier.”
