LEQ’A:MEL – New Democrat MLAs Pam Alexis and Bob D’Eith say that people in Leq’a:mel First Nation will be kept safer in emergency situations thanks to provincial funding to help local governments and First Nations strengthen their plans for emergency evacuation and public notification planning.

“The more prepared we are the better. As we know well, emergencies happen and evacuation planning, especially in rural and remote areas, is essential to the safety of people in our communities,” said Pam Alexis, MLA for Abbotsford-Mission

Leq’a:mel First Nation is receiving $28,500 for an evacuation route plan and the development of a public notification plan.

“The FVRD covers a large area, and having an evacuation guide will be helpful to keep people safe and prepared in case we experience an emergency situation here in the Fraser Valley,” said Bob D’Eith, MLA for Maple Ridge-Mission.

In total, over $800,000 is being provided to communities across B.C. to support this work to improve emergency evacuation route and public notification plans. Over $164 million has been provided to local governments and First Nations through the Climate Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF) for over 1,500 projects to help communities become more climate resilient. This work also supports the Province’s Climate Preparedness and Adaptation Strategy, which outlines a broad range of actions for 2022-2025 to address climate impacts and build resilience across B.C.
