YELLOWKNIFE – On Monday, Canada’s NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh met with the Premier of the Northwest Territories, Caroline Cochrane, to discuss the most important issues for people in the Northwest Territories. Premier Cochrane and Singh spoke about the NDP’s plans for more homes that people can afford, and necessary action to tackle climate related disasters like wildfires.

“Families in the Northwest Territories have had a really tough few years, first the pandemic cut them off from a lot of needed resources, then a cost-of-living crisis has made it harder to get by, and now wildfires and a changing climate are forcing people to flee their homes,” said Singh. “With all of this happening, Northerners expect to see the federal and territorial governments working together to make life a bit easier.

It’s a pleasure to be here in the Northwest Territories to hear the concerns that residents have and to meet with Premier Cochrane about potential solutions. New Democrats are here to deliver results that make life better for residents in the north.”

Singh is visiting the territory and calling on the Liberal government to provide more supports to front-line workers, like the firefighters, who are fighting the unprecedented wildfires threatening northern communities. He’s also calling on the Liberals to provide more supports for northern climate resilience, and much-needed investments in affordable housing.

“The Liberal government needs to stop dragging their feet on getting supports to northern Canada. If they we’re acting with the urgency people expected from their government, we’d see a real partnership between them and the territories that would help people with the cost-of-living and climate crisis,” added Singh. “New Democrats are here to listen and work with the territorial government to make sure people in the Northwest Territories receive the support they need to make it through these difficult times.”
