As the cost-of-living soars, Liberals and Conservatives united in ignoring corporate greed « Canada’s NDP

In reaction to Statistics Canada new inflation numbers, Canada’s NDP Finance critic Daniel Blaikie issued the following statement:

“While Tuesday’s inflation numbers show some progress in stopping prices from rising as quickly, we know there is little chance of prices coming down meaningfully any time soon. This is especially true for the cost of food as grocery inflation remains stubbornly high.

This news will not bring relief for Canadians struggling with record prices and unprecedented line ups at food banks across the country.

We cannot afford to wait any longer for the federal government to make ambitious investments in social housing, curtail financial speculation in the housing market and enact stronger competition laws to push back against oligopoly in the grocery sector.

These kinds of policy could help reduce inflation and make life more affordable for Canadians in the medium term, but implementing them means talking about the role corporate greed has played in fueling Canada’s inflation crisis; something Justing Trudeau and Pierre Poilievre are untied in refusing to do.

New Democrats believe it is long last time we put the wellbeing of Canadians ahead of protecting the stories rich CEOs tell themselves to rationalize their exaggerated profits.”
