NANAIMO – Local organizations will continue to deliver programs that improve people’s quality of life thanks to nearly $61 million in Community Gaming Grants for human and social services, say New Democrat MLAs Doug Routley and Sheila Malcolmson.

“People in our region know the huge impact that community service organizations can have, particularly on small and rural communities,” said Doug Routley, MLA for Nanaimo-North Cowichan. “I’m glad to see these organizations are being recognized with grant funding to support their work.”

Fourty-two organizations in the region are receiving over $2 million in funding for human and social services, such as meeting the needs of under-served groups, providing public outreach and education, and more, including:

  • Nanaimo Brain Injury Society -$ 87,500
  • Nanaimo Men’s Resource Centre -$ 110,000
  • Nanaimo Community Kitchens Society -$ 45,000
  • People for a Healthy Community On Gabriola Society – $ 73,550
  • Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank Society – $ 202,500
  • Tillicum Lelum Aboriginal Society – $ 78,000
  • Haven Society: Promoting the Safety of Women, Children, Youth and Families -$ 51,550

“Nanaimo is home to so many remarkable groups working hard and caring for community,” said Sheila Malcolmson, MLA for Nanaimo. “We’re funding over fourty local groups and the work they do.”

The $61 million in funding this year for human and social services grants comes out of the $140 million distributed annually to not-for-profit organizations that deliver other essential services and make life better for people in British Columbia.
