NDP MLA says people in Prince Rupert will benefit from funds to reduce the risks of disaster related to climate change
Prince Rupert – New Democrat MLA Jennifer Rice says that people in Prince Rupert will benefit from provincial funding to help reduce risks from future disaster related natural hazards and climate change.
“From heat waves to flooding, to sea level rise and shoreline erosion, people are feeling the impacts of climate change and are eager for action to protect our communities and prepare for the future. We know how important it is to make these preparations today with local governments, so they have the capacity to respond,” said Jennifer Rice, MLA for North Coast. “With this funding, Prince Rupert will be more prepared in the face of emergencies and have more resources to keep people safe.”
The City of Prince Rupert is receiving $93,000 in funding for their Resilience Climate Adaptation Plan.
Approximately $2.3 million through the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF) is going to local governments and First Nations across B.C. under the Climate Risk Reduction-Climate Adaptation stream. The funds will help communities to reduce risks from climate-related emergencies, such as floods and extreme heat events. It also supports the Province’s Climate Preparedness and Adaptation Strategy, which outlines a broad range of actions for 2022-2025 to address climate impacts and build resilience across B.C.
