Liberals keep putting oil and gas executives before Canadians while wildfires are raging « Canada’s NDP

NDP Environment and Climate Change Critic Laurel Collins made the following statement after learning that the Liberal government worked with Suncor, one of Canada’s largest oil companies, to write their carbon capture plan:

“More than 400 fires are burning across Canada and its only June. At this point, it’s pretty clear that people all across the country are experiencing the consequences of the climate crisis.

With that, Canadians expect that their government will have their backs, and do what’s necessary to protect people and the planet. Instead, the Liberals keep putting the profits of the richest oil and gas companies ahead of Canadians.

And big oil has already successfully lobbied the Liberals for $12 billion of public money in subsidies for carbon capture.

People are rightfully frustrated, but the Liberals don’t plan to stop letting rich oil and gas CEOs write Canada’s climate plan – Minister Guilbeault said so himself.

New Democrats know that people’s well-being and safety should be put before the profits of the ultra-rich, that’s why we’re going to keep fighting to end all fossil fuel subsidies and instead invest in a climate plan that protects our planet and workers.”
