Backgrounder: Canada and British Columbia invest to upgrade wastewater treatment infrastructure in communities across British Columbia

The Government of Canada is investing $26,540,552 through the Green Infrastructure Stream (GIS) to support seven Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program projects across British Columbia.

Village of McBride

Village of McBride Wastewater Lagoon Cell 1 Revitalization Project

This project will increase capacity to treat wastewater by replacing the clay liner with bituminous geomembrane liners in one of the two lagoon cells, which is currently out of order. As a result, the facility will meet regulatory requirements, reduce sediment in the groundwater, and improve water quality discharged from the lagoon into the Fraser River.

Brentwood Bay Sewer Project

This project will increase wastewater management capacity by replacing the Brentwood Bay pump station and constructing a sewer gravity main to re-route wastewater flows from the Brentwood Bay pump station to the Silverdale pump station. The Silverdale pump station will be upgraded to handle the flows from the Brentwood Bay pump station.

Town of Golden Integrated Sanitary Sewer System Upgrades for Collection and Treatment

This project will upgrade the sanitary sewer, ventilation, treatment tanks, and pumps to improve the efficiency and reliability of the wastewater system.

Kamloops – Tranquille Sanitary Sewer Upgrade Phase 3

This project will increase capacity to manage wastewater by replacing a section of an aging sanitary sewer main with PVC pipe, provide services to residents not yet connected to the system, and increase capacity to accommodate future growth.

City of New Westminster *

New Westminster – West End Combined Sewer Separation & Green Infrastructure Program

This project will increase the capacity to manage wastewater and increase the capacity to treat and manage storm water by installing new infrastructure which will improve the quality of the storm water that enters the Fraser River. This project will separate combined sewers in the city as a part of ongoing efforts to separate a minimum of 1.5% of combined sewer system annually.

Village of Tahsis

Tahsis Wastewater Treatment Reconfiguration and Upgrade Project

The project will increase the capacity to treat and manage wastewater by reconfiguring the wastewater collection system to redirect flows to the South plant, decommissioning the North plant and completing a series of needed infrastructure renewal upgrades at the South plant to improve efficiency and extend its use.

District of Tofino

Tofino – Secondary Wastewater Treatment and System Upgrades Phase 2

The project will construct a wastewater treatment facility that meets regulatory standards that require sewage treatment to attain at least a secondary standard and will improve and protect the local marine environment. The facility and related infrastructure will service the District of Tofino, Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation. Parks Canada will also have the ability to connect to the District’s sanitary conveyance system.
