NDP critic for foreign affairs, Heather McPherson (Edmonton Strathcona), made the following statement:

“New Democrats are alarmed by the deteriorating political, economic, and human rights situation in Pakistan, including reports of political violence following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan by paramilitary forces.

Democracy, the rule of law, and human rights must be always protected. We call on this government to urge Pakistani authorities to respect the rights and freedoms of journalists, civil society organizations and all citizens.

New Democrats stand with Pakistani-Canadians who are rallying across the country in solidarity with loved ones in Pakistan.”
