Experts available for Wildfire Day interviews – TRU Newsroom

KAMLOOPS — The first Saturday of May is Wildfire Community Preparedness Day. With wildfires of note already burning in the BC Interior, and even within cities, public awareness of what to do to stay safe is more important than ever.

With several faculty members who study various aspects of wildfire research, Thompson Rivers University (TRU) has experts available for media interviews relating to Wildfire Community Preparedness Day, which falls on May 6 this year.

Three experts are specifically available this week:

  1. Michael Flannigan is the BC Innovation Research Chair in Predictive Services, Emergency Management and Fire Science, with the Faculty of Science.

He can address topics such as fire weather, fire and climate change, fire management and fire season outlook.

Mike is available most of this week, except for Friday afternoon.

  1. Jill Harvey is the Canada Research Chair in Fire Ecology, with the Faculty of Science.

She can address topics such as how wildfire drives ecosystem change and how this can inform forest and fire management practices and enhance resilience in Canada’s forests.

  1. Michael Mehta is a professor of Environment, Culture and Society with the Faculty of Arts. He is an environmental social scientist who specializes environmental and health-risk issues.

He can address air quality and its health impacts, risk and crisis communications and environmental justice.
