RICHMOND – New Democrat MLAs Kelly Greene, Henry Yao and Aman Singh say that people in Richmond will be safer during future flooding events thanks to the completion of a flood mitigation project.

“Climate change is top of mind for Richmond residents and communities across B.C.,” says Kelly Greene, MLA for Richmond-Steveston. “This preliminary dike design work is an important step to keeping people safe, and I’m happy that this work is supported by the provincial and federal governments.”

The City of Richmond has received $500,000 in funding for the Steveston Island preliminary dike project. Raising the dike on the current alignment will have major impacts to the existing properties, businesses, and infrastructure in the Steveston area.

“The City of Richmond has worked to maintain the dikes in our community that will keep us safe,” said Henry Yao, MLA for Richmond South-Centre. “Our government is helping to build upon this work by funding the necessary planning exercises for flooding here in Richmond.”

Across the province, a total of 24 flood mitigation projects have been recently completed to make people and communities safer. The projects were supported by more than $10.8 million in funding, cost-shared by the provincial and federal governments.

“Climate emergencies like floods are devastating for everyone, but we know that by being proactive in our mitigation strategies, we can have better outcomes,” said Aman Singh, MLA for Richmond-Queensborough. “That’s why our government is working with federal and municipal partners to fund planning exercises like the dike design in Richmond.”
