NDP MLA Melanie Mark says new infrastructure funding a boost for community services

NDP MLA Jennifer Rice says double the funding for rural projects will help people on the North Coast

NORTH COAST – New Democrat MLA Jennifer Rice says that double the funding for B.C.’s newest economic diversification program will enable municipalities, First Nations and not-for-profit organizations to complete more projects in rural communities, including the Gitga’at First Nation.

“The projects supported through the REDIP will make a real impact in diversifying local economies in Indigenous and rural communities across the North Coast,” says MLA Jennifer Rice. “I am also pleased to see that many of the projects funded will support the revitalization of Indigenous art, tourism, and wellness in First Nation communities.”

The North Coast is receiving $5,457,046.40 as part of the Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program (REDIP) to promote economic diversification, clean economy opportunities and infrastructure development in rural B.C.

The projects include:

  • Gitga’at First Nation’s Emergency Response and Research Facility (MERRF) – $1,000,000.00
  • Expansion of Haida Tourism in Gaw Tlagee – $1,000,000.00
  • Implementation of Fish Offal Reduction Facility – Lax Kw’alaams Fish Plant, Lax Kw’alaams, BC           – $1,000,000.00
  • iit’l gudaad – “We Remember” Haida Heritage Plaza            – $669,999.00
  • Cloudberry Trail – Phase Two – $600,000.00
  • Gitmaxmak’ay Local Food Economy Upgrades and Diversification  – $576,175.00
  • Kelp and Shellfish Hatchery Integration and Upgrade Planning Project – $100,000.00
  • Regional Economic Development Strategy Development – $100,000.00
  • The Haida Lodge at Kay L’lnagaay – $99,230.40
  • Sta’la Riverside Restaurant Turn Key Project – $311,642.00

The New Democrat government is investing $66 million this year to support over 200 local, rural projects. Building resilient economies is part of the Province’s work through the StrongerBC Economic Plan to build a strong and sustainable economy through clean and inclusive growth.
