NDP MLAs Ronna-Rae Leonard and Josie Osborne say new provincial funding for local libraries on Vancouver Island will benefit people

COURTENAY – New Democrat MLAs Ronna-Rae Leonard and Josie Osborne are announcing funding for local libraries, allowing library users to benefit from modernized technology, enhanced programs and services, and better access to information.

“People rely on libraries as key services in our community,” said Ronna-Rae Leonard, MLA for Courtenay-Comox. “This funding will make sure our libraries are well-supported and they can expand their programs and services.”

The Vancouver Island Regional Library, which has branches in Bowser, Comox, Courtenay, Cumberland, Hornby Island, Port Alberni, Tofino, Ucluelet and Union Bay, is receiving $2,044,280.72.

All 71 B.C. public libraries and organizations that help libraries deliver their services will receive one-time grants totalling $45 million in addition to their annual operating funding. This will give libraries flexibility to address local priorities, including longer hours, bigger digital collections and better access to literacy and lifelong learning opportunities.

“From books and magazines to free internet access and accessible learning materials for people with disabilities, libraries offer so many important services to people,” said Josie Osborne, MLA for Mid Island-Pacific Rim. “This investment will allow our local libraries to continue to innovate and serve people even better.”

This funding gives libraries the flexibility to address local priorities while ensuring they are able to meet the evolving needs of their local communities over the coming years.
