MISSION – New Democrat MLAs Pam Alexis and Bob D’Eith are welcoming funding to improve local emergency support services (ESS) for people evacuated from their homes during natural disasters or other emergencies.

“It’s heartbreaking to see people be evacuated from their homes, and we know how important it is to make sure those people are supported,” said Pam Alexis, MLA for Abbotsford-Mission. “We’ve seen this first-hand here in the Fraser Valley, and I’m glad this funding will improve the experience for both evacuees and emergency responders.”

The following local governments and First Nations are receiving funding:

  • City of Abbotsford – Group Lodging Kit, $29,335.13
  • City of Mission, $29,232
  • Leq’a:mel First Nation, $30,000

“The people who administer emergency support services do great work, much of it led by volunteers,” said Bob D’Eith, MLA for Maple Ridge-Mission. “Funding for things like supplies, improved communications and more volunteer and hiring capacity will make sure that communities across the province are able to modernize their approach and keep up with the reality of climate-related emergencies.”

In total, $2.2 million is being distributed to communities across the province. The funding will expand local capacity to provide emergency support services through volunteer recruitment, retention, training, and the purchase of supplies and equipment. This funding will also support the modernization of local ESS programs to move toward digital registration and reporting.
