VICTORIA – New Democrat MLAs Grace Lore, Murray Rankin, and Rob Fleming say local organizations will be able to protect local ecosystems and keep people safe thanks to over $500,000 from the Community Gaming Grants program for environmental and public safety initiatives.

“We know that restorative justice can improve the wellbeing of people and our entire community,” says Murray Rankin, MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head. “That is why we are investing in organizations like the Victoria Restorative Justice Society, to make sure that people can continue to access these important programs and resources.”

In Greater Victoria, the following community organizations are receiving funding for public safety work, which can include restorative justice, firefighting, search and rescue, emergency preparedness and community safety.

  • Search and Rescue Society of British Columbia, $77,000
  • Southern Vancouver Island Nature Trails Society, $13,500
  • Victoria Marine Rescue Society, $28,000
  • Victoria Restorative Justice Society, $70,000

The following local organizations are receiving funding for environmental initiatives, such as animal protection, conservation and environmental awareness programs:

  • British Columbia Sustainable Energy Association, $28,500
  • Dee’s Orphan Kitten Fund, $17,250
  • FMC Fair Mining Collaborative Society, $12,500
  • Habitat Acquisition Trust, $60,000
  • Land Trust Alliance of British Columbia, $28,500
  • Rocky Point Bird Observatory Society, $32,000
  • Sierra Club of BC Foundation, $121,000
  • Victoria Compost and Conservation Education Society, $39,000

“Local not-for-profit organizations in Victoria play an important role in the well-being of people and our environment,” said Grace Lore, MLA for Victoria-Beacon Hill. “That’s why our government is investing in organizations to support their ongoing efforts and build a stronger community.”

More than $12 million in new funding for public safety and environment programs will support 281 non-profit organizations that are helping make life better for people throughout B.C.

“Local organizations help to create thriving, healthy, and connected communities that people want to live in,” said Rob Fleming, MLA for Victoria-Swan Lake. “Supporting our local non-profits with these grants allows them to continue their vital work.”
