SOOKE – New Democrat MLAs Mitzi Dean and John Horgan say local organizations will be able to protect local ecosystems and keep people safe thanks to $515,000 from the Community Gaming Grants program for environmental and public safety initiatives.

“People across Esquimalt and Metchosin love getting out to enjoy our beautiful trails and parks,” said Mitzi Dean, MLA for Esquimalt-Metchosin. “By investing in community organizations that preserve these places, we are ensuring these spaces will be there to enjoy for years to come.”

In the West Shore, the following community organizations are receiving funding for public safety work, which can include restorative justice, firefighting, search and rescue, emergency preparedness and community safety.

  • Juan de Fuca Marine Rescue Society, $72,500
  • Otter Point Volunteer Firefighters Association, $15,000
  • The Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Inc., $250,000
  • Southern Vancouver Island Nature Trails Society, $13,500

The following local organizations are receiving funding for environmental initiatives, such as animal protection, conservation and environmental awareness programs:

  • Coastal Invasive Species Committee Society, $8,500
  • Gorge Waterway Action Society, $20,000
  • Home is Where We Live – Lifecycles Project Society, $50,500
  • Victoria Humane Society, $85,000

“Not-for-profit organizations bring our community together and help make us more resilient,” said John Horgan, MLA for Langford-Juan de Fuca. “These Community Gaming Grants will allow many deserving organizations to continue providing programs and services that make life better for people.”

More than $12 million in new funding for public safety and environment programs will support 281 non-profit organizations that are helping make life better for people throughout B.C.
