COQUITLAM – On Wednesday, NDP critic for Disability Inclusion Bonita Zarrillo (Port Moody–Coquitlam) called on the Liberal government to immediately turn the Canada Caregiver Credit into a refundable tax benefit to put money back in caregivers’ pockets. With the rising cost of living, Zarrillo says that caregivers who look after sick or disabled loved ones deserve to be supported.

“Caregiving is the backbone of Canadian society – and its economy,” wrote Zarrillo. “But we are at a breaking point for caregivers as the healthcare crisis puts growing pressure on families to care for their loved ones. The government must care for caregivers who are trusted with the personal care of loved ones including cooking meals and making doctor’s appointments.”

In a letter, Zarrillo reminded the Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland that she must move ahead with delivering this refundable tax benefit as specified in her mandate letter. She also noted that one in four Canadians is a caregiver, and one in two will be a caregiver at some point in life—with little or no compensation at all. Zarrillo says this has to change.

“Caregivers provide three hours of care for every hour provided through the medical system and we know that women are the most impacted, making up 70 per cent of care providers,” added Zarrillo. “The Liberals aren’t doing enough to support caregivers who need help to help the people they love. A refundable Canada Caregiver Credit will put money back in caregivers’ pocket and give them a little peace of mind while they look after loved ones.

New Democrats will continue to push the Liberals to deliver the support caregivers need and deserve.”
