NDP MLA Mike Starchuk says grants will support sports events and tourism in Surrey

SURREY  – New Democrat MLA Mike Starchuk says funding for sporting events in B.C. communities will boost local tourism and enrich sports communities for B.C. athletes, so sports fans, athletes, and businesses can enjoy games close to home, and travel to games across the province.

“Sports like softball, baseball, and cricket shape our youth and bring our community together,” says Mike Starchuk, MLA for Surrey-Cloverdale. “This is why our government is investing in sports programs that provide the resources and opportunities for our athletes to continue to achieve their goals through organized competitions.”

In Surrey, the following events are receiving funding:

  • $4000 for the Little League BC Major Provincials which occurred last July
  • $4,500 for a BC Artistic Swimming Western Canadian event which occurred this January
  • $2500 for the SportAbility Provincial Championship which occurred in March
  • $7500 for the Vancouver Goalball Club Surrey Goalball Grand Slam which occurred in March
  • $4500 for the BC Rugby Senior Club Finals this April
  • $3000 for the BCPFA Provincial Flag Championships this June
  • $1000 for the Cricket Big Bach Cup this June and July
  • $9500 for the Canada Cup International Softball Championship this July
  • $5,000 for the Canadian Ultimate Frisbee National Championships this August
  • $3,000 for the BC Cross Country Championships this October

Financial support for these events is coming through two funding programs – the Major Events Program and Hosting BC. The Province invests $500,000 annually in each program, for a combined $1 million for these events and opportunities.

Through the Major Events Program, non-for-profits are supported to host competitions and community development opportunities. Hosting BC is administered by viaSport, and supports organizations to put on smaller-scale events and opportunities for under-served and under-represented groups and regions.

Over 140 organizations in total are receiving support through these programs.
