OTTAWA – On Thursday, the House of Commons Committee on Foreign Affairs and international Development unanimously agreed to a motion by NDP foreign affairs Critic Heather McPherson (Edmonton Strathcona) to urgently study the situation in Iran.

McPherson raised the issue in response to the Iranian regime’s continued brutal repression, executions of protestors and the Liberal government’s inaction with regard to listing the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Recent media reports have also revealed troubling links between the IRGC and some residents of Canada.

McPherson’s motion also calls on the Minister of Foreign Affairs to testify before the committee to explain Canada’s response to the situation in Iran.

“The committee’s study should reveal crucial information to help Parliamentarians and all Canadians push for a stronger response to this crisis,” said McPherson. “New Democrats will continue to push the Liberal government to do everything possible to support the people of Iran.”
