NDP MLA says funding will help local fire departments to keep people safe

SMITHERS – New Democrat MLA Nathan Cullen says that new funding for equipment and training will help local volunteer and part-volunteer fire departments to continue keeping people safe during fires and other emergencies.

“People depend on our local fire crews to keep their families safe, and it’s vital that these volunteers and staff are supported with current training and equipment,” said Nathan Cullen, MLA for Stikine. “I’m glad this funding will help local departments to make upgrades so they can continue protecting our communities.”

The following fire departments are receiving funding in Stikine:

  • Smithers, $29,971 for training and equipment
  • Atlin, $29,950 for turn-out gear and self-contained breathing apparatus air cylinders
  • New Hazelton, $25,000 for gear upgrades

The funding is part of over $6.3 million that is being distributed to 114 local governments, First Nations, and volunteer and part-volunteer fire departments around the province.

Since 2017, First Nations and local governments have been approved for more than $111 million through the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund for more than 1,300 projects that help communities mitigate and prepare for disasters and climate-related emergencies.
