NANAIMO – New Democrat MLAs Doug Routley and Sheila Malcolmson say more people in Nanaimo will be able to safely and conveniently choose active transportation to get around, thanks to provincial funding for new active transportation infrastructure.

“Partnering with local governments to help increase active transport networks, is an important step to ensuring our communities becomes more accessible for people of all abilities,” said Doug Routley, MLA for Nanaimo-North Cowichan. “This funding will help the City of Nanaimo build on existing improvements to Fourth street, and ultimately will provide safer active transportation options for students at VIU and NDSS.”

Nanaimo is receiving $500,000 for the Alberni and Forth Complete Street project (phase 2).

“We all want options for people to get around their communities, and to protect nature at the same time. Funding active transportation in Nanaimo helps keep peoples’ costs down, and climate change too,” said Sheila Malcolmson, MLA for Nanaimo.

74 new infrastructure and planning projects in communities all around BC are receiving funding as part of this round of provincial grants. These include projects like multi-use pathways, bike lanes, pedestrian bridges, and improvements to lighting, sidewalks, and road quality and safety.

By partnering with local and Indigenous governments to fund these projects, the province is giving more people the option to use active transportation in their daily travel. Making these options more accessible supports the province’s CleanBC commitments to increase trips by walking, cycling, and transit by 30% by 2030.
