NDP MLA says people in North Coast will benefit from funds to reduce the risks of disaster related to climate change
HAIDA GWAII – New Democrat MLA Jennifer Rice says that people in Haida Gwaii will benefit from provincial funding to help reduce risks from future disaster related natural hazards and climate change.
“People living on Haida Gwaii have been impacted by climate-related emergencies over the last few years and it’s important that we invest in projects that will help keep people safe,” said Jennifer Rice, MLA for North Coast. “With this funding, the Old Masset Village Council will be able to create tools that will help strengthen the communities response during an emergency.”
Old Masset Village Council in Haida Gwaii is receiving $148,175 in funding for the creation of a community resilience tool for Haida Gwaii.
A total of $23.9 million from the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF) will support communities to better prepare for, mitigate and respond to climate-related emergencies such floods and extreme temperatures.
The Disaster Risk Reduction – Climate Adaptation stream under the CEPF supports the Province’s Climate Preparedness and Adaptation Strategy. The CEPF is administered through the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) and funds projects that strengthen the resilience of First Nations and local governments in responding to and preparing for natural disasters and climate change.
