QUALICUM BEACH – New Democrat MLA Adam Walker says that new provincial emergency preparedness funding will help improve emergency operation centres, and better equip the local government and First Nations in Qualicum Beach to respond to emergencies and keep people safe.

“I am grateful for our emergency response teams and I am glad we are providing this funding to ensure they have the equipment they need,” said Adam Walker, MLA for Parksville-Qualicum. “This investment in a generator for the Civic Centre will go a long way to make sure necessary operations can continue if we lose power.”

Over $3.2 million in funding is being shared among 84 First Nations and local governments to help communities build or upgrade emergency operations centres (EOCs), purchase equipment, or enhance capacity through volunteer recruitment, retention and training.

The Town of Qualicum Beach is receiving $25,000 in funding. This grant will be used to purchase and install a generator for the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre so that local and regional emergency functions can maintain operations during power outages.

Budget 2022 provides $2.1 billion to support communities in building back better from recent disasters, and to strengthen defences to make sure people across B.C. are protected from future disasters.
