Greens Celebrate Indigenous Peoples commitment to the environment
The Green Party of Canada celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day by recognizing the heroic efforts of Indigenous peoples to protect globally significant ecosystems from harm.
At a time when the UN has issued a code red for humanity, because of climate change and significant biodiversity loss, Indigenous people are standing up to protect old growth forests.
“The blockade and peaceful actions at Fairy Creek, where Indigenous people and allies are struggling to protect B.C.’s old growth forests from logging, on Pacheedaht and Ditidaht territory, is just one example of this brave commitment to protect ecosystems,” said Dr. Cheryl Matthew, member of the Indigenous Peoples Advisory Circle (IPAC) of the Green Party of Canada.
“The Indigenous communities are demonstrating leadership because they are calling for protections from harmful logging practices by placing ecological health of forests ahead of other considerations. They are advocating to provide sustainable jobs in second and third growth forestry,” said Krystal Brooks, Ontario Representative on Federal Council.
“ Canadians need to see and appreciate the work and actions of land defenders such as Jared Lowndes, a proud member of the Laksilyu Clan of the Wet’suwet’en Nation, and allies like Howard Breen and Brent Eichler, who stand in solidarity with land defenders,” said Marlene Hale, IPAC member.
This day is a time to reflect on how the struggles of these land defenders support all work to prevent climate crisis. On this day it’s important to acknowledge the sacrifice of the more than 1000 Indigenous people and allies who were arrested at Fairy Creek fighting to protect the land. On this day the Green Party salutes you.
