Canadian auto workers need more support from the Liberal government: NDP « Canada’s NDP

NDP critic for Innovation and Industry and Auto Strategy, Brian Masse, made the following statement:

“Canada’s auto industry has been struggling with inadequate government support for decades. This is costing people in communities like mine in Windsor, jobs they rely on to support their families. While we welcome today’s announcement to upgrade hybrid car plants in Ontario, the Liberal government needs to do more to support Canadian workers and our auto industry as we work to reach important climate goals.

For years, New Democrats have been calling for a national auto strategy to build manufacturing capacity in our communities and to ensure Canadian auto workers continue to have good jobs.

The Liberal government must take every action necessary to curb our emissions. Transitioning to electric vehicles is necessary for saving the environment and supporting workers. Across the river in Michigan, there have been billions of dollars invested by multiple auto makers in new plants and new battery manufacturing facilities with nothing similar here in Canada. Despite the Liberal government’s commitment on zero emission vehicles, there are still too few electric vehicles available for Canadians drivers.

New Democrats are committed to holding the government to account to support Canadian workers, our auto industry and to fight climate change.”
