Holiday cheer warms up Robson Square ice rink

December 2, 2021 at 12:03 pm  BC, News, Politics

Robson Square ice rink is open for people to lace up their skates and hit the ice this winter for the 12th annual outdoor skating season.

“The iconic Robson Square ice rink is officially opening to provide children, students, families, residents and tourists with a COVID-safe, fun and affordable holiday activity this winter season,” said Lisa Beare, Minister of Citizens’ Services. “It’s free if you have your own skates, and skate rentals and helmets are available. So, please come out to skate and create lasting memories while enjoying the spirit of the holiday season.”

Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, skating at Robson Square has become a favourite holiday tradition. It typically draws about 120,000 visitors annually. Because of pandemic-related challenges, last year was the first time the rink remained closed since it was reopened by the Province as part of the 2010 Olympic Games celebrations. COVID-19 protocols are in place this year. Those 12 and older will be required to show proof of vaccination to gain entry. Masks are mandatory for all participants.

“The Robson Square winter season offers families a way to come together, be healthy, take part in a Canadian pastime and enjoy festive entertainment,” said Brenda Bailey, MLA for Vancouver-False Creek. “We’re proud to continue this tradition for the thousands of people, families and tourists who visit the rink each year.”

Spencer Chandra Herbert, MLA for Vancouver-West End, said: “Skating at the Robson Square ice rink is a great winter activity for the whole family to take part in together. So, get yourselves bundled up and enjoy some free exercise on the ice with family and good friends.”

Sponsored by the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association (DVBIA) in the month of December, the 2021-22 winter season runs from noon on Dec. 2, 2021 to Feb. 28, 2022.

“After the challenges of the past year and a half, we’re thrilled to be able to contribute to a facility that brings out smiles and laughter in children and a happy, festive mood to all who take part,” said Nolan Marshall, president and chief executive officer, DVBIA. “We encourage people to come out, have some fun and support businesses in the area.”

This year, the rink is opening the new indoor skate rental and café that features a skate dryer, lockers and an outdoor patio with heaters.

The rink will launch a 12 Days of Christmas celebration, including live musical entertainment from Dec. 13-24, 2021, and there will be entertainment on New Year’s Eve.

Quick Facts:

  • The rink is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, through to the end of February 2022, weather permitting.
