City of Kamloops Supports City of Merritt in Efforts to Return Residents Home

Kamloops, BC – The City of Kamloops is working side-by-side with our neighbours in Merritt to get the community back on its feet. The City is sending several staff and pieces of equipment to Merritt this weekend to help assess the flood damage to structures and assist their utilities department in getting the water and sewer systems operational.

The City of Merritt, with support from the City of Kamloops, will be doing rapid damage assessments to properties that were directly affected by the flood throughout the City. City staff, including members from Kamloops Fire Rescue, have participated in the BC Housing Rapid Damage Assessment program training and will be able to assist trained inspectors.

The City is also supporting Merritt’s Emergency Operations Centre with personnel throughout the weekend to assist with various aspects of planning for recovery and resiliency and providing relief to staff.

Emergency Services Support volunteers working on behalf of Emergency Management BC, have been working with urgency to help register and provide supports to hundreds of Merritt residents throughout the week, and will continue to work as long as help is needed.

“Our hearts go out to our neighbours in Merritt during this devastating event. We want you to know we are here for you and with you, shoulder-to-shoulder, to get you back to your homes.” said Mayor Ken Christian.

Mayor Linda Brown of Merritt adds, “We are humbled by the generosity and quick action by the City of Kamloops. We have a long road ahead of us and are comforted knowing we have the support of both the City of Kamloops and its residents.”

The City of Kamloops requests patience and understanding from Kamloops residents as we put all our effort into getting Merritt back up and running. Kamloops residents’ requests for service will be prioritized based on urgency and turn around times may be longer that normal.
