TRU Day of Giving keeps going to fill needs – TRU Newsroom
KAMLOOPS–It takes more than COVID-19 to cancel Thompson Rivers University’s annual Day of Giving that raises funds to support students to achieve their dreams.
This annual 36-hour event usually kicks off at the TRU Foundation Breakfast, but that traditional gathering has been sidelined due to the pandemic. However, as they say, the show must go on.
TRU’s Day of Giving begins at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, and ends at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6. We are asking alumni and donors who have given in the past to contribute again, and for new donors to give what they can. Anyone who gives can direct where their funds go.
The university’s goal is to raise $36,000 in those 36 hours. That’s $36,000 that will help students stay in school, complete their studies and go into the world to make a difference.
While some people have been hit hard by the pandemic, students have also been significantly impacted. These are students on their way to working in health care, in non-traditional jobs and in other careers that help us all.
“This is a chance to help students aspiring to become nurses and carpenters, artists and entrepreneurs. Anything that donors can give is deeply appreciated and reinforces to these students that they are worth investing in because they are our future,” said TRU Vice-President University Relations Brian Daly.
Donations can be made online at tru.ca/givingday or by calling 778-471-8469 (between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.).
TRU is grateful for the support of so many generous donors who understand that by helping students, they are creating a richer community. Below are comments from a few donors who have made a difference to TRU students:
“For many years, our gifting focus was on creating endowments to fund scholarships and bursaries in geography, tourism and learning skills, and for Clearwater students entering TRU. We are very pleased to be able to assist students with their dreams of higher education, which is what the Day of Giving is all about. Over the years, we’ve also donated toward the research centre near Wells Gray Park so that many students can experience and study the diversity of landscapes in this remote area away from the city. There are so many ways to make a difference in the lives of students.” — Roland and Anne Neave
“At Abbott Wealth Management, we believe in supporting the future of students and TRU. It is inspirational to see the potential of creative and limitless learning that manifests into tangible and incredible results within our community and around the world. We employ graduate students who are key and valuable contributing members of our team. Because of their contributions, we are leaders in our industry. It is our honour to continue to support TRU and future generations of leaders.” — Mark Bertoli
