Juan de Fuca Marine Trail open for the season
Monday, June 17, 2019 2:00 PM
Extensive upgrades to the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail are complete, allowing hikers access to the entire 47-kilometre wilderness trail this season.
The 2019 Sombrio Point Trail Upgrade began in February to revamp park facilities at 24 locations in the area. For a safer hiking experience, new stairs, bridges, boardwalks and railings have been installed, along with improved infrastructure that addresses cliff exposure.
The completed work is Phase 2 of a multi-year project addressing infrastructure improvements to the trail. Phase 3 is scheduled to begin in spring 2020.
Most of the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail is designed for strenuous day or multi-day hiking and camping in a rugged, isolated area. Hikers should be prepared for uneven ground and slippery conditions on muddy trails, wooden surfaces, boulders and rocky shorelines.
Some easy to moderate day-hiking opportunities are available from the four trailheads located at Juan de Fuca East (China Beach), Sombrio Beach, Parkinson Creek and Botanical Beach.
