Kamloops residents are invited to a free, interactive open house on Saturday, May 25, from 10:00 am–2:00 pm, to celebrate National Public Works and Civic Operations Week. This year’s theme is “It Starts Here.”
Activities are planned for all ages and aim to showcase the important contributions that the City’s Civic Operations team provides in Kamloops through infrastructure, innovation, mobility, and security. Free family activities include:

  • opportunities to explore trucks and equipment
  • aerial high rides in the bucket truck
  • electric vehicle showcase
  • tours of the City’s Greenhouse, Mechanical Shop, and Sign Shop
  • ECOSmart Team activities, including button making
  • bouncy fire house and face painting
  • Kamloops Fire and Rescue, RCMP, and Bylaw Services information
  • “Build a Bridge” with Capital Projects (hard hats and treats available for children)
  • planter box painting and plant your own seeds to grow (while supplies last)
  • Sustainability Kamloops backyard composting information
  • door prizes

“We’re pleased to showcase our Civic Operations Department and the multi-faceted work it does to support infrastructure, transportation, facilities, utilities, green spaces, and more. We welcome residents of all ages to stop by, learn some new things, and have fun,” said Jen Fretz, the City’s Civic Operations Director.
Visitors will receive a site map of the event, which will be stamped at each open house station. Attendees will have an opportunity to use their map as a ballot for door prizes, including a rain barrel and a hanging flower basket. The Valleyview Overlanders Lions Club will be on site to serve free hot dogs, soda, and juice. The United Way Thompson Nicola Cariboo will also have a display booth to share information on its programs.
The open house can be accessed via Bunker Road and will be hosted at the Civic Operations Centre Yard. For more information and details, visit Kamloops.ca/Events.

As part of National Public Works and Civic Operations Week, tours of the Kamloops Centre for Water Quality are available to the public on May 21 and 23; pre-registration is required. Please call 250-828-3461 for information on times and to join one of the tours.

About National Public Works Week: The Canadian Public Works Association hosts and celebrates National Public Works Week each year during the third week in May to educate the public on the importance of public works to daily living. This year’s theme, “It Starts Here,” showcases aspects of public works that are integrated into our modern society, such as innovation, infrastructure, mobility, and security, all of which help to build healthy communities.
