We did it! WILD WOR(L)DS Poetry and Nature-Friendly Yards
On April 25, 2026 several dozen people gathered at the Kamloops Art Gallery studio for a varied selection of poetry readings on nature and climate. Local writers and high school students shared their own works and those of their favourite poets – exploring land, place, environmental change, and our relationship to the natural world. All the while, visual artist Bonnie McBride worked live in the space, creating art cards using themes from the poems as they were presented.
There were readings by: Wendy Weseen, Garry Gottfriedson, Sue Buis, Thom Vernon, Pete Smith, Lindsay Curry, George Johnson, Maedeh Hedayatifard and Philip P. Junior. Readers and listeners alike were treated to a selection of exquisite appetizers provided by event sponsor and chef Francesco Oliva, the owner of Mediterraneo Cafe on Victoria Street. The Kamloops Art Gallery generously provided studio space, staff support, and event setup. Mingling participants also enjoyed the gallery’s Secwépemc cultural exhibit Tsxyestém r Tmícw: Respect the Land.
Thanks to everyone who came to read, listen, mingle, explore, and celebrate the relaunch of Transition Kamloops’ Nature-Friendly Yards project. If you’re thinking of making changes in your yard that attract more pollinators and reduce watering requirements, learn more about our 2026 pilot program for residents.
See you again soon!

Transition Kamloops
Transition Kamloops is a volunteer-driven, registered not-for-profit society focused on increasing local resilience and self-sufficiency in food, water, energy, culture and wellness. We emphasize a local economy, healthy ecosystems, and grassroots community building, while reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. We believe in a better way: a community that sustains life in all its diversity, strives for equality and justice and invests in the future.
Transition Kamloops recognizes that we are living on Secwépemcul’ecw—land that was never ceded to settlers, and continues to be home to vibrant Indigenous cultures, languages, and traditions. We acknowledge the impact of colonization, forced displacement, and ongoing struggles faced by Indigenous peoples. We commit to listening, learning, and building positive relationships with Indigenous communities as we work towards reconciliation.
