Hidden Homesteads: In the Backcountry Hills

Hidden Homesteads: In the Backcountry Hills

In winter we sometimes head out into the hills to look for old homesteads. These can be spotted on Google Earth and some planning may be required to find a reasonable route to the sites.   On a cold winter day I followed snowmobile tracks on backroads up into the hills south of Kamloops.

Using a GPS and a mapping app, I turned off the track to the homestead.

The building was standing on a small hill overlooking a marsh.

The interior was mostly intact, but the bed, table, stove, and were strewn about and the insulation was falling down.   Doors and windows were open to the elements.

A nearby lake was frozen over and quiet.

This was an out-and-back hike of about 5 km.   The location is not disclosed here, but there are some clues in a YouTube video provided as a link.

About KamloopsTrails

I started exploring this area in 1976 and I continue to follow tracks and routes wherever they lead, with the aid of map, compass, GPSr and camera. After many dead-ends, but also many discoveries, I chose to share this information. Getting out 12 months each year, I continue to explore trails, tracks, routes, and waterways of the Kamloops area and beyond.
