Go By Bike Week – Transition Kamloops

Transition Kamloops  May 8, 2025 at 3:04 pm

Take advantage of this lovely spring weather and participate in Go by Bike Week May 31—June 6!

GoByBike BC is hosting its second event of 2025 from May 31 to June 6. GoByBike BC is a registered society making miles of progress by inspiring more people to commute on bikes, whether it’s to work, school, or anywhere in between. Since 1995, they have facilitated successful events that highlight the fun and numerous benefits to be had from biking instead of driving.

In addition to exploring the community and utilizing Kamloops’ available bike infrastructure, cycling is a low-impact activity that reduces cardiovascular disease risk (Nordengren et al., 2019) and can be a phenomenal way to manage stress. Cycling also reduces traffic congestion, saves money on parking and gas, and contributes to reducing the greenhouse gas emissions from passenger vehicles. In 2024, 56,148 BC residents participated in GoByBike events, which saved 539,682 kilograms of greenhouse gases (as calculated by the EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator).

If these benefits weren’t reason enough to get your bike out of storage, GoByBike BC has incredible prizes lined up for this event, including:

  • A cycling trip to Vietnam
  • An Avenue E-bike
  • Bike swag (panniers, locks, guidebooks)
  • Patagonia jackets
  • $1,000 Active Transportation grant for two BC schools
  • Participate by creating an account here to register yourself and log your rides. Log your bike trips independently or create a team of coworkers, family members, friends, neighbours, or students to show how much you can ride together. Friendly competition to see who can cycle the most in one week can be a great team building exercise—literally! You can log any trip made using active transportation to be entered to win the prizes listed above. The more trips you log, the more entries you’ll get! Note that if you have a Strava account, you can also connect it to GoByBike’s LogMyRide system, making it even easier to track your distance cycled.

If biking isn’t for you, consider an alternative form of active transportation like walking, scootering, or rollerblading! Each trip made without a gas-powered vehicle reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

    Transition Kamloops

Transition Kamloops is a volunteer-driven, registered not-for-profit society focused on increasing local resilience and self-sufficiency in food, water, energy, culture and wellness. We emphasize a local economy, healthy ecosystems, and grassroots community building, while reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. We believe in a better way: a community that sustains life in all its diversity, strives for equality and justice and invests in the future.

Transition Kamloops recognizes that we are living on Secwépemcul’ecw—land that was never ceded to settlers, and continues to be home to vibrant Indigenous cultures, languages, and traditions. We acknowledge the impact of colonization, forced displacement, and ongoing struggles faced by Indigenous peoples. We commit to listening, learning, and building positive relationships with Indigenous communities as we work towards reconciliation.
