Chartwell Retirement Residences, TNRL, Downtown Businesses back Met Opera Livestream at the Paramount with Enthusiasm – The Kamloops Film Society

Kamloops, BC (September 10, 2024) – Support and excitement for opera in Kamloops is growing! In addition to the many donors that raised over $13,000 in June, the Kamloops Film Society is pleased to announce that Chartwell Retirement Residences and the Thompson-Nicola Regional Library have signed on as sponsors to support the Metropolitan Opera’s award-winning series of live high-definition cinema simulcasts at the Paramount Theatre. Other support can be seen when walking down Victoria Street, with opera-themed window displays at The Ruby Room and 406 Sportswear Ltd. 2024-25 opera season schedules are available to pick up in both stores.

As part of Chartwell’s generous support, they will be providing complimentary coffee, tea and custom opera-themed cookies at the Paramount Theatre for guests to enjoy during four of the eight Met Opera: Live in HD performances beginning Saturday, October 5th with The Tales of Hoffman through to May 17th, 2025.

After touring their distinctive theatres and learning about the Kamloops Film Society’s commitment to inclusive community events and connecting audiences with cinematic art, it became clear that we were well aligned for this partnership. A pre-season celebration and presentation of Madama Butterfly will be held at 6:15 p.m.on Saturday, September 14th at the Paramount. Madama Butterfly is a Met Opera encore presentation from last year and is not live. Tickets are $20.

On Saturday, September 28th at 2:30pm, the downtown Kamloops Library will be hosting a free ‘Opera Talk’ led by local opera singer Heidi Muendel on the second floor. The Library will also be offering single opera tickets for the 2024-2025 season that can be checked out by patrons,similar tothoseavailable for Paramount Theatre movies and the Wildlife Park.

“To see the local community step up with such enthusiasm to help bring the Met Opera: Live in HD program to the Paramount has been wonderful,” says Kamloops Film Society Executive Director, Colette Abbott. “I’m extremely grateful to our sponsors, supporters and to volunteers, Colleen Stainton and Heidi Muendel who have been organizing all of these wonderful engagements around the upcoming opera season.”

The Met Opera: Live in HD presentations are broadcast live from the Lincoln Centre in New York at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time (10:00 a.m. Pacific Time). All operas are subtitled and with an opera host who gives an overview of each act.  During the intermissions, the audience is treated to behind the scenes set changes and interviews with the lead singers, costume designers and more.

Individual opera tickets and season passes for the 2024-25 season are now available at thekfs.ca and the Paramount Theatre, 503 Victoria Street, Kamloops.

2024–25 Live in HD Season at a Glance: The Live in HD season will begin on October 5, 2024, with Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann, and continues with Jeanine Tesori’s Grounded (October 19, 2024), Puccini’s Tosca (November 23, 2024), Verdi’s Aida (January 25, 2025), Beethoven’s Fidelio (March 15, 2025), Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro (April 26, 2025), Strauss’s Salome (May 17, 2025), and Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia (May 31, 2025). All performances will be Saturday matinees transmitted live from the Met stage.

Kamloops Film Society

The Kamloops Film Society is the umbrella organization that operates the Paramount Theatre and runs two main events: The Thursday Film Series and the annual March Kamloops Film Festival, which includes the Kamloops Independent Short Shorts Festival. The KFS has been operating for over 45 years and was officially incorporated under the BC Societies Act on August 17, 1994. In the spring of 2019, The Kelson Group purchased the Paramount Theatre and leased the venue to the KFS. The support of The Kelson Group and Ron Fawcett has made the venture possible as The KFS continues to make the theatre a cultural venue.
