ESQUIMALT – BC NDP MLA Darlene Rotchford says new funding will help strengthen local emergency management practices in Esquimalt, ensuring they are inclusive and respectful to support people when they need it most.

“In an emergency, everyone needs to be able to understand response plans and how to stay safe,” said Darlene Rotchford, MLA for Esquimalt-Colwood. “This program will help city staff and volunteers to build strong relationships with Indigenous communities and develop plans that meet everyone’s needs.”

The Township of Esquimalt is receiving $30,000 in funding for Indigenous Cultural Safety training for Emergency Operations Centre staff and volunteers.

This funding is provided through the Indigenous cultural safety and cultural humility training steam, as part of the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund. Projects funded through this stream include staff and volunteer training, and building and strengthening relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. These projects help ensure people are included and cared for during emergencies.

The Community Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF), has provided almost $350 million to First Nations and local governments for more than 2,700 projects since 2017.
