BC NDP MLA Toporowski says funding will support community safety and crime prevention in the Cowichan Valley
NORTH COWICHAN – BC New Democrat MLA Debra Toporowski says that people in the Cowichan Valley will benefit from provincial funding for community safety projects led by local organizations.
“People in the Cowichan Valley are lucky to have so many organizations supporting justice, helping reduce crime, addressing harms, and moving forward healing for our communities,” said Debra Toporowski, MLA for Cowichan Valley. “This funding is how we show our support for their work.”
In the Cowichan Valley, eight projects are receiving a total of $404,297. Local projects include:
- Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association – $24,390 for the Hooves, Hearts, and Drumbeats program
- Cowichan Women Against Violence Society – $140,000 for the Raven’s Nest Child and Youth Advocacy Centre
- Ts’ewulhtun Health Center (Cowichan Tribes) – $39,995 for healing through cultural supports
The BC New Democrat government is providing $8.23 million through the Civil Forfeiture Grant Program, supporting 173 community-led projects across the province. The funding comes from the seized proceeds of unlawful activity, which are redirected back into making our communities safer.
Projects receiving this funding focus on areas including crime prevention, Indigenous healing, restorative justice, addressing gender-based and domestic violence, child and youth supports, and addressing hate crimes.
This year, the new anti-hate funding stream supports organizations and meeting places for groups that may be at higher-risk of hate-motivated crimes, like LGBTQ2S+, faith-based, or minority cultural groups.
