Statement from Leah Gazan on National Indigenous History Month « Canada’s NDP

June 1, 2026 at 9:00 am  Federal, Politics

June marks National Indigenous History Month, a time to celebrate the rich histories, cultures, languages, and contributions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples across Turtle Island. It is also a reminder that Indigenous histories are living histories that are woven into the past, present, and future of these lands. As we mark the beginning of this month, I honour the strength, resilience, and leadership of Indigenous peoples and communities.

National Indigenous History Month offers an opportunity to learn from and celebrate the diverse cultures, knowledge systems, and traditions that have flourished on these lands since time immemorial. From language and storytelling to music, art, governance, and stewardship, Indigenous peoples continue to shape and enrich our collective future. The ongoing revitalization of Indigenous languages, cultures, and ways of knowing reflects the enduring strength and brilliance of Indigenous nations.

This month also invites us to reflect on the stories, teachings, and histories that Indigenous peoples have carried forward across generations. Through courage, determination, and love for future generations, Indigenous communities have preserved knowledge and truth despite efforts to erase them. We honour the Survivors of residential schools, as well as the families, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and communities who have shared their experiences and truths to ensure that future generations understand this history.

At a time when some seek to undermine or deny these truths, we reaffirm our commitment to listening to Indigenous voices and upholding the histories that Indigenous peoples have safeguarded for generations. Truth-telling remains essential to building understanding, respect, and meaningful relationships.

Happy National Indigenous History month!
