BC NDP MLA Steve Morissette’s motion to support independent movie theatres passes

VICTORIA –  BC New Democrat MLA Steve Morissette’s motion to support independent movie theatres was passed in the Legislative Assembly today. The motion calls on the provincial government to allow small, independent movie theatres to serve liquor during mixed-age showings.

“I was very grateful to receive support for this motion from colleagues on all sides of the house,” said Steve Morissette, MLA for Kootenay-Monashee. “At its core, this motion is about supporting rural economic initiatives, small businesses and preserving the charm, memories and culture that small, independent theatres bring to communities across the province. I look forward to continuing  positive discussions with the Minister of Agriculture and Food to see action on this well-supported motion.”

Movie theatres are currently only able to serve alcohol in adult-only showings. This change would give small independent movie theatres the same revenue-generation opportunity as other venues, such as live music venues, which are permitted to serve alcohol to adults during mixed-age concerts.

“I applaud to the MLA for Kootenay-Monashee for bringing this motion forward and advocating on behalf of such important community spaces and small businesses,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture and Food. “I’m looking forward to working together with him on this initiative.”

In his remarks closing the debate on the motion, MLA Morissette continued:

“When a local theatre closes, we lose more than a screen. We lose a gathering place, a cultural space and a piece of community identity. Supporting these theatres means supporting local jobs, local economies and the shared experiences that strengthen our communities.”
