Transition Kamloops volunteers at an event

Want to get involved with Transition Kamloops?

Thanks for reading this newsletter. Do you want to help produce it? 😉

I’m only half joking. When it comes to running a volunteer-led non-profit like Transition Kamloops, the old saying that “Many hands make light work” holds true. As I said in an earlier article, volunteers are our superpower!

Transition Kamloops is the only organization of its kind in Kamloops with a mission to build a stronger, healthier, and more resilient community. We run projects that focus on environmental, social, and economic sustainability—all at the local level.

Just in the last month, we organized a very successful poetry reading to launch the Nature-Friendly Yards project, hosted a workshop on improving bike parking around the city, held our third Repair Cafe of the year, supported a clothing exchange, hosted Green Drinks, co-sponsored an evening discussion on the impacts of the climate crisis in this area, and hosted information tables at the City’s scooter launch event and at the Clean the Beach event. Whew!

We have a core group of 7-10 dedicated souls who do the bulk of the work needed to keep the organization active, day in and day out. That includes keeping the website updated, publishing newsletters, planning events, running advocacy campaigns and putting on special events. In addition to those kinds of core tasks, we are always welcoming new volunteers to our action teams, which currently include the Nature-Friendly Yards team, the Green Burial group, and, of course, the Repair Cafe.

If you’d like to explore volunteer opportunities with us, the first step is to fill out our volunteer form—one of us will get in touch with you soon. People with experience in accounting, event planning, research and writing for content creation, website and social media management, volunteer management, or running advocacy campaigns are always needed. If you’re not sure where you would fit, please reach out anyway; there are many ways to help!

We’re extremely grateful for all the precious hours that many of you donate to this cause. We also know that some people might prefer to support us financially rather than volunteer their time. Although we have become experts at putting on events and campaigns creatively (i.e., with almost no money!), we have identified the establishment of a small but steady revenue stream as an important step in enhancing our own sustainability. To that end, we have recently begun welcoming monthly donors. If you support the work we do and would like to see it continue and expand, we would be honoured if you would consider becoming a monthly donor to Transition Kamloops.

Your generosity, whether it be in terms of time or financial support, enables us to continue to grow our impact. Thank you for your confidence in Transition Kamloops and in our community.

Transition Kamloops

Transition Kamloops is a volunteer-driven, registered not-for-profit society focused on increasing local resilience and self-sufficiency in food, water, energy, culture and wellness. We emphasize a local economy, healthy ecosystems, and grassroots community building, while reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. We believe in a better way: a community that sustains life in all its diversity, strives for equality and justice and invests in the future.

Transition Kamloops recognizes that we are living on Secwépemcul’ecw—land that was never ceded to settlers, and continues to be home to vibrant Indigenous cultures, languages, and traditions. We acknowledge the impact of colonization, forced displacement, and ongoing struggles faced by Indigenous peoples. We commit to listening, learning, and building positive relationships with Indigenous communities as we work towards reconciliation.
