Ministers comment on speeding Up approvals for resource projects – May 7, 2026

Prime Minister Mark Carney and ministers speak briefly with reporters on Parliament Hill as the federal cabinet holds its weekly meeting.

The prime minister, as well as ministers Steven MacKinnon (transport, government House leader) and Rebecca Chartrand (Northern and Arctic affairs) face questions on reports that the government is planning changes to the regulatory process to ensure resource projects are approved more rapidly.

Minister Eleanor Olszewski (emergency management) and MacKinnon respond to questions on issues surrounding the Alberta separatist movement.

Minister Evan Solomon (AI) is asked about the privacy commissioner’s investigation into OpenAI’s ChatGPT. He also comments on possible legislation that would impose restrictions on the use of social media platforms for youth under the age of 16.

Minister Marjorie Michel (health) and Anita Anand (foreign affairs) discuss the government’s response to the hantavirus outbreak, which to date has impacted three Canadians.

Minister Heath MacDonald (agriculture and agri-food) is asked about concerns raised by cattle producers over the proposed trade agreement between Canada and South American Mercosur trade bloc countries
