NDP MLA Lajeunesse says Juan de Fuca Trail to reopen this summer
JORDAN RIVER – BCNDP MLA Dana Lajeunesse says that the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail is expected to fully reopen for hiking and backcountry camping this summer as crews continue to make significant progress repairing damaged infrastructure.
“I am pleased to share that the Juan de Fuca Trail will be re-opening this summer, bringing hikers from far and wide to make memories in this amazing location,” said Dana Lajeunesse, MLA for Juan de Fuca-Malahat. “I want to thank everyone who has worked to make this deeply valued place safe and functional again, and especially the Pacheedaht Nation for their long-standing stewardship of the land.”
Major bridge repairs are nearing completion, meaning people can start planning their trip to experience one of B.C.’s most iconic coastal hikes, and a confirmed opening date will be announced mid-May.
In late 2024 and 2025, a series of storms caused extensive damage to the 47-kilometre trail on Vancouver Island’s southwest coast. The storms washed out sections of the trail, toppled trees and created unsafe slopes. Several bridges, boardwalks, and shelters were also damaged.
Repairs are being completed in phases, with priority work focused on the major infrastructure required to safely restore hiking along the full length of the trail. This includes:
- Flying in and installing approximately seven engineered bridges
- Constructing more than 800 metres of stepped boardwalk and multiple staircases through steep and unstable terrain
- Rerouting the trail in several locations to bypass areas affected by landslides, erosion, and ongoing slope instability
Minor repairs will continue throughout the summer and fall while the trail remains open. People hiking the trail are advised to use caution, follow all posted signage, and be prepared for brief delays as crews work to improve safety and long-term durability of the trail.
