NDP MLA Melanie Mark says new infrastructure funding a boost for community services

BC NDP MLA Toporowski says funding will help better support evacuees in the Cowichan Valley during emergencies

Cowichan Valley – MLA Debra Toporowski say that provincial funding being distributed to local governments, regional districts, and First Nations across the province, including in the Cowichan Region, will support emergency support services, making sure people who are displaced and impacted in emergencies can access the support they need.

“This funding will help improve staff and volunteer training and purchase essential equipment to support people in an emergency,” said Debra Toporowski, MLA for Cowichan Valley. “This will also help our region increase access to mental health and social supports for people impacted by emergency events.”

The Cowichan Valley Regional District is recieving $150,000 for group lodging equipment, upgrades, mental health supports, and training and development opportunities.

This funding, from the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness’ Community Emergency Preparedness Fund, is investing nearly $2.5 million to support 54 projects in almost 90 communities in British Columbia.

This will support Governments and Nations to strengthen their Emergency Support Services to help people when they need it most, through training and recruiting volunteers, improving equipment, and accessing supplies like overnight kits for evacuees.
