Member of the Month – Kamloops Arts Council
For the member of the month – March 2026, we interviewed KAC’s marketing manager and artist Sofia-Grace.
Full Name: Sofia-Grace
Medium: Mixed Media, working in multiple medias from digital illustration, watercolor, acrylic and sometimes sculpture.
How long have you been practicing your art:
Making art has always been something I have loved doing since I was a child and growing up, but I didn’t commit to being an artist until two years ago.
What got you originally interested in the art you do:
I don’t have an established kind of art that I do yet. As an emerging artist, I am trying to find my “artistic voice”. What interests me to continue working on my art is the play and experimentation. I love combining what inspires me, such as historical artworks, other artists and my favourite elements (like the ocean) and slowly start to see my own visual language and personal art style grow and develop.
What do you most enjoy about art: That I made it 🙂
What is your favorite joke/quote: The earth without art is just “eh”
If you could teach everyone one art medium or method, what would it be, why:
I would teach how to exercise personal creativity or at least widen the perspective people generally have on creativity! Creativity is a skill for everyone, applicable to many areas of life, not just for art. It’s a skill of problem solving, coming up with new approaches and solutions. Creativity can look different depending on an individual, and just because you aren’t artistic doesn’t mean you can’t be creative! As I see it, it can help execute ideas, manage conflicts, express yourself, and learn new things. I think it’s an important thing to exercise and would love to show individuals how to broaden their definition of creativity and how to use it in their lives.
What do you think makes art important:
Connection! Art has a beautiful way of connecting people and in many ways. One way that I particularly love is when an artist translates an experience into an artwork, and even though it might be based on a personal event for them, it can still connect with a completely different person. I think there is something special when art can resonate with you on a whole other level, making you feel seen in your experiences and not alone. It creates connections with the artist who made the work, the work itself, others who enjoy it and ourselves. Art is a language that can be used as a tool to connect!
Why are you a member of the Kamloops Arts Council: Because it connects me with the local creative community!
What are you looking forward to the most in this upcoming year (A special show or project you’re working on):
I am trying to work on a collection of works that explores the grieving process to hopefully display in my first solo exhibition. I have been working on the concepts, logistics and everything for over a year now as it was part of my graduating project for my degree. I am at a place where I am experimenting and creating the art to hopefully be done a majority of the collection by the end of this year.
