New Democrats to elect new leader on Sunday, March 29

WINNIPEG – Some 2,000 New Democrats are expected to converge in Winnipeg for the NDP’s 2026 national convention. The convention will culminate in the election of our next permanent leader on Sunday, March 29.

The leadership race has sparked renewed growth and interest in the NDP, which now has over 100,000 members nationwide. The membership has grown over 67 per cent since the beginning of the race and set records for leadership fundraising.

“New Democrats have spent the better part of a year rebuilding our party and talking to Canadians about what matters to them,” said interim NDP Leader Don Davies. “Canadians are seeing how Mark Carney’s Liberals are adopting conservative policies and they’re turning to New Democrats to fight for them and the issues that matter to working families.”

In addition to electing our new permanent leader, delegates will debate policy resolutions ranging from how Canada should respond to Donald Trump’s trade war, how to protect our public health care system from privatization, how to build a sustainable economy with good jobs for workers, foreign policy and affordability issues of all kinds.

“Canadians are worried about their future. They find themselves in an increasingly uncertain world,” added Davies. “But rather than fighting for workers, Mark Carney’s Liberals have attacked labour rights and slashed services Canadians rely on. The NDP’s focus is on supporting people through these turbulent times with practical solutions that bring relief to Canadians now.”

The NDP convention will run from Friday, March 27 until Sunday, March 29.
